We Have a New Family Addition ~ You can call us MOM-ATEES!
It's official we are Mom-atees and we didn't even have to gain 1,000 pounds to do it! We are the proud adoptive parents of "Jemp" the Sarasota manatee. We are bananas about mantees that's why each of vacation homes has the name Sirenia in it. Pronounced SIR - EN - EE - AH. Sirenia is the name of the order of animals including the endangered mantee. We are lucky to be Steward members of the Save the Manatee Club here in Florida. To celebrate we decided to adopt Jemp this year!

As part of this celebration we have also added a LIVE MANATEE WEBCAM to our website. Feel free to be on the lookout for manatee action. You will be able to view them most often during the cooler months when they gather in the natural springs and canals to stay warm, right in the backyard canals at our vacation rentals Sirenia By The Sea, Sirenia Beach House, Sirenia Cove. During the summer you can view the manatee highlights streaming on the Manatee-cam.

Jemp's story started out in July, 1995, when he was rescued from red-tide exposure. Red Tide are microscopic organisms that give off a toxic by-product affecting the central nervous system of manatees and other marine life. After he was rescued, Jemp spent some time in rehabilitation at Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa and was released in August, 1995. It figures that Jemp is a ladies man since he is most often seen in mating herds around Sarasota Bay and Anna Maria Island. Aren't we always attracted to the bad boys?

Jemp winters in our neck of the woods and summers towards the quiet Florida Everglades. Jemp has a noticable scar patternon the middle right side of his back and a slightly smaller white scar on his lower right back. See if you can spot him while visiting Anna Maria Island and let us know on our Faecbook Page - Anna Maria Island Beach Life!

You can adopt a manatee for as little as $25.00 USD. What a great idea for someone who has everything!
