When most people plan a trip to Anna Maria Island, they usually end up with the same list of places: the famous waterfront restaurants, the popular beach bars, and the spots that show up on every "Best Things to Do on AMI" article. But recently, locals and longtime visitors were asked a simple question:
"What's one local place around Anna Maria Island that more people should know about?"
The answers were surprisingly refreshing. Instead of recommending the usual tourist hotspots, people shared their favorite family-owned cafés, neighborhood markets, bakeries, surf shops, hidden parks, and local businesses they've been visiting for years.
These aren't necessarily the places with the biggest crowds or the most Instagram posts. They're the places people actually return to every time they're on the island.
If you're looking to experience the side of Anna Maria Island that locals love, start with these hidden gems!

Bean Point Beach Access 🏖️🌅
Almost everyone who has visited Anna Maria Island has heard someone say, "You have to see Bean Point." And they're right.... Located at the very northern tip of the island, Bean Point is one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in all of Florida. The white sand, turquoise water, and incredible views where Tampa Bay meets the Gulf make it a favorite spot for sunrise walks, sunset photos, and peaceful beach days.
But here's the catch: many first-time visitors drive around looking for a parking lot that doesn't exist.
Unlike many Florida beaches, Bean Point doesn't have a large public parking area. Instead, visitors access the beach through small public pathways tucked between residential homes. Parking is limited to designated street parking and fills up quickly, especially during peak season. Look for the signs or you will get ticketed!
🚶 Best Public Access Points
Gladiolus St. & North Shore Dr. - St- Public Beach Access (Main Access Point)
Fern St. & North Shore Dr. - Public Beach Access
These access points are marked by small white "Public Beach Access" signs and lead through sandy pathways to the beach. There is no parking at these points.
🚗 Local Parking Tips
Arrive early, especially on weekends.
Look for legal street parking near Fern Street, Gladiolus Street, or Jacaranda Road, just off of North Shore Dr.
Never block driveways or park in no-parking zones. Warning! Enforcement ticketing & towing is active.
If nearby parking is full, consider parking near Bayfront Park and walking the .6 miles (13 minutes) or biking to the beach.
📍 Main Access Location
📍 North Bay Blvd & North Shore Drive, Anna Maria, FL 34216
⭐ Local Tip: The limited parking is actually part of what keeps Bean Point feeling so special. Because it's harder to access than other beaches on the island, it often feels quieter, more natural, and less crowded than many visitors expect. BUT be careful of the rip currents... they are strong! It's no longer recommended to swim at the point due to a few serious accidents that have occurred. Take in the beauty but we do not recommend swimming here.

Anna Maria General Store 🥪☕
📍 503 Pine Avenue, Anna Maria, FL
If there was one place that consistently came up in local recommendations, it was Anna Maria General Store. Located right in the heart of Pine Avenue, this island institution has been serving locals and visitors for decades.
It's much more than a convenience store. You'll find breakfast sandwiches, made-to-order deli lunches, fresh coffee, groceries, snacks, and beach essentials all under one roof. Many locals recommend grabbing breakfast here before heading to the beach rather than waiting in line at one of the island's busier restaurants.
Captain Anthony's Seafood Market 🦀🐟
📍 107 Spring Avenue, Anna Maria, FL 34216
Some of the best seafood experiences on Anna Maria Island don't happen in a restaurant. Tucked away on Spring Avenue just steps from the beach, Captain Anthony's Seafood Market is one of those places that locals and repeat visitors quietly recommend to anyone planning to cook during their stay.
Known for fresh local seafood, stone crab when in season, smoked fish dip, ceviche, and daily catches, it's the kind of place where you can pick up dinner items and enjoy it back at your rental while watching the sunset. Several Anna Maria Island visitors specifically mention stopping here every year because the seafood is consistently fresh and locally sourced.
For visitors looking to experience the island beyond restaurant reservations and wait lists, this is exactly the type of hidden gem worth knowing about.
The Happy Manatee ☕🐾
📍 9908 Gulf Dr., Anna Maria
The Happy Manatee is one of those places you could easily walk past if you didn’t know it was there, but once you step inside, it instantly feels like a spot you want to stay awhile. Tucked into a small plaza alcove on the north end of Anna Maria Island, this cozy coffee shop has built a quiet following among locals and repeat visitors who love its relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.
Inside, it has a warm, laid-back vibe that a lot of people compare to “Central Perk” from Friends—comfortable seating, soft conversation, the smell of fresh coffee, and a space that feels more like a neighborhood hangout than a tourist café.
It’s the kind of place where:
☕ You grab a slow morning coffee before the beach
📖 People linger with a book or laptop
🧡 Regulars are greeted by name
🌴 Time on island pace actually feels real
While many visitors head straight for the busier breakfast spots, The Happy Manatee is more about slowing down and starting your day like a local. It’s not flashy, and that’s exactly the point.

Toasted Mango Cafe 🍳🥭
📍 3240 East Bay Drive, Holmes Beach, FL
Every great beach town needs a favorite breakfast spot, and The Toasted Mango Cafe has quickly become one of Anna Maria Island's most beloved. Family-owned and full of personality, it's known for creative breakfast dishes, fresh ingredients, quality coffee, and friendly service.
Whether you're craving a classic breakfast or something a little more unique, this spot consistently earns rave reviews. It's the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and enjoy island time.
Smoqehouse AMI 🍖🔥
📍 5406 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach, FL
When locals talk about hidden food gems on Anna Maria Island, Smoqehouse AMI comes up again and again. Known for its slow-smoked barbecue, pulled pork sandwiches, smoked meats, fresh salads, and laid-back atmosphere, this local favorite has quietly built a loyal following. While visitors often flock to the island's more famous restaurants, many regulars consider Smoqehouse one of the best casual lunch spots on AMI.
⭐ Local Tip: When I first heard about this restaurant opening. I drove right past it 3 times before spotting it. Keep your eyes open for a small hidden away restaurant. While some restaurants get all the attention, Smoqehouse has quietly built a loyal following among those who know the island best.
West Coast Surf Shop 🏄♂️🌊
📍 3908 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach, FL
Want a break from souvenir stores and step into living history? West Coast Surf Shop opened its doors in 1964, making it one of the earliest surf shops in Florida and widely recognized today as the oldest continuously operating surf shop in the state! Started by the Brady family and has stayed a true family-run island business ever since. Even if you're not shopping, it's worth stopping in just to soak up the authentic island vibe.
Over the decades, it’s become more than just a shop, it’s part of Anna Maria Island’s surf and beach culture and offers everything from apparel and beach gear to surfboards and accessories.
⭐ Local Tip: Don't miss their surf camp for young kids in the summers. Sign up early!
The Doctor’s Office 🩺🍸💊
📍 5312 Holmes Blvd, Holmes Beach, FL 34217
This one might confuse first-time visitors a little, because yes, it used to be an actual doctor’s office. Before it became one of the most creative cocktail bars on Anna Maria Island. This building served for decades as a real medical office for island residents. Locals would come here for checkups, treatment, and everyday care long before it ever became a place for craft cocktails and date nights.
Today, it’s called The Doctor’s Office, and it fully leans into the theme in the best way possible. Instead of prescriptions from a pharmacy, you’ll get “prescriptions” in the form of expertly crafted cocktails, small plates, and a fun, slightly quirky upscale atmosphere.
It’s especially popular for:
🍸 Creative craft cocktails
🌿 Cozy garden seating
🥩 Elevated bar bites and shareable plates
🌙 Date nights and evening drinks after the beach
🎶 Sing along piano bar
The space still nods to its history, both in name and vibe, but now it’s all about inventive drinks, great bar food, and one of the more memorable nights out you can have on the island.
Scott’s Deli 🥪🥖
📍 6000 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach, FL 34217
Sometimes the simplest recommendations are the strongest. Many people recommend "Scott's Deli", and we do too! Anyone who's been there understands why. This family-owned deli has built a reputation for hearty sandwiches, friendly service, and the kind of local atmosphere that keeps people coming back year after year.
It's a perfect lunch stop after a morning on the beach, or better yet get take out for the beach or a boating charter. It's delicious!
Artist Haven AMI 🎨🖼️
📍 5351 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach, FL 34217
Not every hidden gem involves food. Artist Haven AMI is one of the island's favorite places to browse local artwork, handcrafted gifts, and unique coastal treasures. If you're looking for something more meaningful than a typical souvenir shop purchase, you'll probably enjoy spending some time here.
Nautilus Cafe ☕🐚
📍 402 Chuch Ave, Bradenton Beach, FL
The Nautilus Cafe is relatively new and a true hidden gem, especially for coffee lovers. The relaxed atmosphere, quality coffee, and welcoming feel make it an easy place to linger for a while before starting your day. It's one of those spots that feels more like a neighborhood café than a tourist destination and that's exactly why people love it.
Coquina Leffis Key & Herb Dolan Park 🦀🌿
📍 Coquina Baywalk: 2650 Gulf Drive South, Bradenton Beach, FL
📍 Herb Dolan Park: 2501 Avenue A North, Bradenton Beach, FL
Some of our hidden gem recommendations aren't restaurants at all. The elevated mangrove walkway near Coquina Beach officially known as Leffis Key, offers visitors a chance to explore one of Florida's most fascinating coastal ecosystems using a private mangrove rich boardwalk. Another hidden gem park nearby, is Herb Dolan Park which provides opportunities to spot hermit crabs, blue crabs, shorebirds, and other wildlife during low tide. The shallows are impressive.
These quieter spots offer a completely different side of Anna Maria Island and are perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and families.

Pane e Amore 🍝🇮🇹
📍 119 Bridge St Unit 130, Bradenton Beach, FL
Pane e Amore might be one of the island area's best examples of a hidden gem. Tucked away inside the charming open-air courtyard on Bridge Street, it's surprisingly easy to walk right past without realizing it's there.
Once you discover it, however, you'll find authentic Italian dishes, fresh pastries, excellent coffee, and a warm atmosphere that feels worlds away from the busier restaurant scene nearby. The owner and staff are super friendly and ready to make great fresh pasta, and delicious appetizers like their bruschetta which is ramped up with pesto and real Italian cheese. It's hidden in plain sight and that's part of what makes it special!
Breezy Bakery 🥐☕
📍 11904 Cortez Ave W. unit A, Bradenton, FL
Honestly, every beach town deserves a great bakery. Whether you're stopping by for coffee, fresh pastries, breakfast, or a sweet treat before heading to the beach, Breezy Bakery has become one of those places visitors often wish they had discovered sooner. Located just off island on Cortez Road, it's a great spot to hop to while on vacation.
Detwiler's Farm Market 🍉🍊
📍 3500 53rd Ave W, Bradenton, FL 34210
It’s part grocery store, part old-school farm market, and part “why don’t we have this where we live?” kind of place. Locals and visitors love it for fresh produce, baked goods, meats, seafood, and a huge deli section, but honestly, most people come here because it feels more like a bustling local market than a big chain grocery store.
If you’re staying in a Anna Maria Island vacation rental, this is one of the best places to stock up for the week. Think fresh fruit, orange juice, beach snacks, picnic supplies, and easy dinners you can enjoy at home after a long day in the sun.
⭐ Local Tip: A lot of repeat visitors even say Detwiler’s becomes part of their “arrival routine” before they fully settle into island life.
AMI Drink & Dine Passport (The Hidden Discount Secret Most Visitors Miss) 🎟️
One of the most underrated “local hacks” on Anna Maria Island isn’t a restaurant or a beach.... it’s the AMI Drink & Dine Passport. Think of it as a little discount book for exploring the island’s food scene. It’s a locally created program that gives you access to exclusive deals at participating restaurants, cafés, and bars across Anna Maria Island and nearby Bradenton Beach.
Instead of just eating at the same few places, the passport gently pushes you to explore more of the island, while saving money along the way!
The idea is simple:
You buy the passport once (it’s a low-cost, one-time purchase)
It’s valid for a full year
You show it at participating spots to unlock discounts like percentage off meals, drink specials, or small free perks
It works for up to a small group, so it’s great for families or vacation rentals
What makes it especially interesting is that many visitors never even hear about it unless a local mentions it. It’s not heavily advertised in the same way as major attractions, but it includes a surprisingly strong mix of island favorites—everything from casual sandwich shops to waterfront restaurants and local hangouts.
🏝️ Why locals actually like it
The real value isn’t just the discounts. It’s the way it encourages you to try places you might normally walk past. Instead of sticking to the most obvious tourist restaurants, you end up discovering:
Small family-owned kitchens you wouldn’t have searched for
Neighborhood bars and cafés with regular local crowds
Spots off Bridge Street and Pine Avenue that don’t always show up on “Top 10” lists
In other words, it fits perfectly with the same theme as this entire guide: the best AMI experiences often aren’t the most famous ones. They’re the everyday local places people keep going back to.
⭐ Local Tip: If you’re staying on the island for more than a couple of days, it can easily pay for itself just through a few meals and drinks. But even if you don’t use it everywhere, it’s a fun way to explore the island like someone who actually lives here instead of just visiting for the week.
Why These Anna Maria Island Hidden Gems Matter ❤️
What stands out most from the Hidden Gems recommendations wasn't what local people suggested. It's what they didn't. Very few locals rushed to recommend the biggest waterfront restaurants or the places with the longest wait times. Instead, they point visitors toward family-owned businesses, neighborhood cafés, bakeries, local markets, surf shops, art galleries, and quiet nature spots.
Even the more unexpected stops; like a former doctor’s office turned cocktail bar, a historic surf shop still running after 60+ years, or a tucked-away courtyard Italian restaurant. These fit the same idea: the best parts of AMI often reveal themselves slowly, not loudly. The hidden restaurant you tell your friends about after you get home. These places may not always make the travel guides. But they're often the places people remember most. And that's what makes them worth discovering.
You don’t really “see” Anna Maria Island just by hitting the popular spots. You experience it by drifting into the places off the beaten path that locals keep going back to.
We hope you find our Anna Maria island Hidden Gems list helpful in your next vacation planning adventure to Anna Maria Island. 🌴☀️🏖️
